Let’s talk about how Kehlani just slid in and gave us a whole moment.
See what had happened was, with love, Dominique Morgan suggested Kehlani hit the studio and bless us with a sickening remix of their previous release Folded — the same Folded that’s had everybody in a chokehold since it dropped... Yea, that one. Oh, and Dominique had one teeny, tiny request: Get Brandy Norwood on remix. Kehlani simply replied, “Heard you,” and went to work.
As a fellow star myself, I was here for the request. And as far as I'm concerned, Kehlani can do no wrong musically. I knew whatever was created in that studio was going to be musical gold, Brandy or nah. Albeit, I did save space for our fav to appear on the track, because Never Say Never, and it's Brandy... I mean...
Not to mention, that collab would have held me together and in place for the next eight years, EASILY.
Now listen — Brandy didn’t make this version of (un)Folded (again, Never Say Never 🤞🏾), but Kehlani, being the creative genius they are, went into their Brandy Rayana Norwood bag -that is, in fact, a different bag than just your regular Brandy bag- and gave us a DELICIOUS a cappella version that’s giving A Capella (Something’s Missing) all day. The sickening new composition? The clean, dynamic harmonies? The delectable background vocals and ad libs? Chefs. Kiss.
Although the lyrics haven’t changed, the vibe has, in that special way Kehlani has about them. Where Folded is saying, “I know we broke up, and you should definitely come get your stuff… But you know, maybe we can “talk” a lil bit when you get here. Because I might, kinda sort, maybe miss you, just a little bit.” (un)Folded is saying, “Screw it,” (insert passionate make up make-out session here).
💎 Hidden gem: I’m not sure who that is singing background along with Keh Keh on the hook, but whoever they are, their voice is absolutely perfect for this song. The way it harmonizes with those instruments, is very reminiscent of Destiny’s Child. I mean, not a note was missed. My favorite part is how their voice sounds like a wooden flute, airy and whistley at the same time. And the solo at the end hits with the intensity of a RIPPING electric guitar solo, but like a feather floating to the earth, it lands the song ever so gently. Job well done.
This track is one that Kehlani fans can (and will) fall in love with, and the stars, Brandy included, can (and will) appreciate. Kehlani's tone is so clear, clean, and pretty that you’re drawn in and snatched up into yet another chokehold — and that’s just in the first 32 seconds.
This song feels like kehlani threw up their own ally with Folded, ran up, caught it, and slammed that thang down with (un)Folded, while smashing the goal in the process... Or, like they started, and won their own Folded challenge.
I mean, come on!
Kehlani perfectly captured the classical orchestra aspect of the original version, reimagined with a crazy symphonic mix of their own vocals. Honestly, both tracks compliment each other so well that Folded never has to leave your rotation. If they were a cassette single, I’d just keep flipping the tape over — letting Side A & Side B both take me away.
Shoutout to my Mariah Carey Fantasy single cassette that I rocked ‘til it popped.
As a decade long fan of Kehlani's, I have witnessed their growth and how they've really honed their craft and elevated it. I'm just blown away every time they touch a pen or a mic. And if Folded wasn't already demonstrating their dedication and growth, (un)Folded is definitely a manifestation of it.
It's a 10 out of 10 for me — in heavy rotation with no signs of slowing down. Do yourself a favor and hit play. Kehlani’s already got it Folded up for you 😉
