🎶 Sheek’s Vibe: Kehlani – Folded - Side A

A few years back, Jazmine had us all singing about picking up feelings. Now, Kehlani’s got us belting about picking up clothes — because they’ve got them Folded… and us right along with them.

Right out the gate, those beautiful strings in the intro had me. Once the beat dropped, I realized I should’ve been buckling up during that delectable intro instead of getting lost in its rapture — because I was not ready for how smoothly the song just took off.

The classical strings quickly make space for a crazy guitar riff and a super dope drum beat, creating a SICKENING mix. The way those classic strings blend with that electric guitar is unexpectedly perfect. It's the combination I didn't even know I needed until I heard it here.

Layer all that yumminess with Kehlani’s perfect vocals, untouchable pen and a sickening arrangement, and you’ve got something you physically cannot take off of repeat — even if your left leg depended on it.

They come out swinging on the first verse (run for cover mother f—). But that second verse though… Come on, Keh Keh, you really didn’t have to do us like that. Sheeesh! If Taking it up a Notch were a person.

Their ability to spontaneously flip the cadence into something even more fire than what we were just vibing to — and effortlessly adjust the melodies to match — is their superpower.

Kehlani has this special way of flipping the song that feels natural, slightly left -yet, oh so right, and always lands in a perfect little Kehlani pocket made just for them. They don’t just flip it, they alter the molecular structure of the song and make us fall even deeper in love with it. And like Captain America, they can do this all day.

I have an affinity for Kehlani's pen, and the writer in me is in love with the lyrics here. The threads of double entendres woven throughout the beautiful fabric of this song feels like silk. This is what I call a perfect song.

• The vocals (lead, background, ad libs, all’um) are perfect.

• The concept, perfect.

• The lyrics, perfect.

• The hook, perfect.

• That second verse, perfect.

• The vocal choices (especially those sweet, sweet runs), perfect.
